20. Contemplation / Looking

guān · Lake ☱ over Earth ☷

Observing from a distance, before the time comes to act.

The Leader's Path

Wind blowing over the earth, reaching everywhere. This is again a hexagram about a leader, not the Noble One — observation as a way of governing through understanding, not control.

The Lesson

Before you make a decision, give yourself time for a full view. Observation gives you more than a reflexive reaction.

A question to sit with

What do I notice in this situation once I stop looking at it through the lens of my own emotions?

In the I Ching no hexagram stands alone. Each one enters into relationships with others, and those relationships show the situation seen from the other side, in its opposite, and in its hidden tendency.
